Beyond Words

Posted by: Steph on November 4th, 2008

Tonight’s Obama victory is “Beyond Words.” For the first time in my life, I’m excited and proud over an election victory. This must be what Republicans felt in 1980.
Peter and I are celebrating at Sack’s with Maia and Seth. Most of the tables are occupied by Obama supporters - but there are a few Red […]

Mr. Whitekeys Fund Raiser for Ethan

Posted by: Steph on October 20th, 2008

Last night, we attended a fund raiser for Ethan Berkowitz. The event was at a neighbor’s home and featured Mr. Whitekeys, an Anchorage icon revered for his irreverant musical revues, such as the Whale Fat Follies, that poke fun at everyone - especially Alaska Politicians. Mr. Whitekeys was the proprieter of the Fly by Night […]

You Gotta Admit

Posted by: Steph on October 19th, 2008

O.K. - I’m not a McCain-Palin backer (I know - big shock), but Sarah Palin was pretty darn funny on Saturday Night Live. Last night, she was definitely “The Good Palin”, a good sport, funny, etc. Not “The Bad Palin” that we’ve seen way too much of on the campaign trail.

Posted by: Steph on October 19th, 2008

On Friday (Alaska day no less), NOAA officially listed the Cook Inlet Beluga Whale as an endangered species. Alaskan officials are besides themselves over the listing. In addition to the Belugas, Cook Inlet is home to oil wells, a large amount of shipping traffic, and sport and commercial fishing. Plus, the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) […]

Tundra Swans on the Lagoon

Posted by: Steph on October 18th, 2008

A flock of Tundra Swans has stopped over at Westchester Lagoon on their way south. This is extremely unusual - when swans stop by, they usually rest in south Anchorage at Potter Marsh. It’s a real treat to have them in the city.
Thursday night, Tyge and I were out for a walk on Coastal Trail […]

Winter!!!!!!! And a few last Fall pics

Posted by: Steph on October 14th, 2008

Well, the weather has decided to kick it up a notch and remind us that we live in Alaska. Usually, the first snow of the year shows up in mid to late October. And it’s not often a real snow - not one that is going to hang around.
I generally track first snows based on […]

Alaskans, Sarah, and Tanning Beds

Posted by: Steph on September 16th, 2008

Evidently, Governor Palin had a tanning bed installed in the Governor’s mansion shortly after she took office. Various news outlets are having fun with that. But there are those who think that it must be de rigor for Alaskans to own tanning beds. Ha!!!!
As I commented on the the New York Times site, I’ve lived […]

Governor Palin and Senator Clinton Address the Nation

Posted by: Steph on September 15th, 2008

My guess is that many of you have seen this clip from this week’s Saturday Night Live. But if you haven’t, you must watch. It is absolutely hilarious - no matter your political stripe. And Tina Fey - well, she is an astounding spot-on double for Sarah. You could put the two of them side […]

How I’m Spending my Sarah Bucks

Posted by: Steph on September 12th, 2008

Today is quite the day on the Alaskan bank account front: every man, woman, and child who has been a permanent resident of Alaska for over a year receives a whopping $3269 - that’s real money.
$2,069 is our annual Permanent Fund dividend. The remaining $1200 is the Alaska Resource Rebate, or as we refer to […]
