Tundra Swans on the Lagoon

A flock of Tundra Swans has stopped over at Westchester Lagoon on their way south. This is extremely unusual - when swans stop by, they usually rest in south Anchorage at Potter Marsh. It’s a real treat to have them in the city.

Thursday night, Tyge and I were out for a walk on Coastal Trail after dark when I heard a very raucous honking - somewhere on the scale between Canada Geese and the unreal caterwauling of Sandhill Cranes. I couldn’t see out on to the Lagoon. I thought maybe I was hearing Sandhill Cranes - it didn’t dawn on me that the squawking could be coming from Swans. But in the daylight, their large white shapes and big swan butts were unmistakable.

This afternoon, I was reading with the sound of swan squawking wafting in through the window - very nifty indeed.

In the distance. This isn’t a great shot. But I do like the light and the mountains in the background.
