Winter!!!!!!! And a few last Fall pics

Well, the weather has decided to kick it up a notch and remind us that we live in Alaska. Usually, the first snow of the year shows up in mid to late October. And it’s not often a real snow - not one that is going to hang around.

I generally track first snows based on whether they occur before or after my birthday. In the 40+ years that we’ve lived up here, there have only been a handful of times where we’ve received real snow before my birthday. Last week, it snowed hard on three different days. But each time, the accumulation was rained away.

Then on Friday, we literally had a typhoon blow through. 100+mph winds - tons of damage throughout the city. It was really quite something. Saturday was a bit breezy and then on Sunday it started snowing - again. The snow has been falling for three days. The temperature has dropped down into the 20’s and the snow is beginning to stick.

If that’s not winter, I don’t know what is. We’ve all pulled out our winter coats, boots, hats, and mittens - even though we still have trees with leaves!

I had delayed putting on Henry’s studded tires. I figured the snow would melt and I didn’t want to drive the studs around on bare pavement. But, Henry and I have been sliding around for the past two days. So, on with the studs.

So, in memory of Fall, I posted the pictures below. They were taken a few weeks ago. We won’t be seeing any more shots like this until Spring.

Tyge and me, after setting a geocache on the Coastal Trail. The Ski Boy did his usual very good job of official photographer. And I think Tyge looks goofy as he leans into me.

It still cracks me up that there’s moose running around in your city.

Is Tyge puffier? He looks more fluffy and snuggly every time I see him.

  2. Jeri responds:

Great pictures - I especially like the last one, the evening light is really beautiful.

Re: the video on my site, I picked up and am playing with one of these. My video camera is old enough that it doesn’t have digital output - and the inexpensive Flip is perfect for basic video for web.

Frankie: Tygey was a bit shaggy when this picture was taken. And he is definitely fluffy and snuggly.

Jeri: We have a Flip. They’re great. Fabulous and fun design!

  4. Leland Kesler responds:

The last picture is postcard quality. Most excellent.
