How I’m Spending my Sarah Bucks
Today is quite the day on the Alaskan bank account front: every man, woman, and child who has been a permanent resident of Alaska for over a year receives a whopping $3269 - that’s real money.
$2,069 is our annual Permanent Fund dividend. The remaining $1200 is the Alaska Resource Rebate, or as we refer to them “Sarah Bucks”.
Governor Palin felt that because the state of Alaska is awash in oil money, we ought to distribute some of that money as fuel assistance to all state residents. Hence the $1200 Sarah bucks.
In Bush Alaska, fuel costs are through the roof. Unleaded gas is $10 a gallon. And home heating fuel oil is $9.10 gallon. That segment of the population needs help. Fixed or low income urban residents are also in a tough spot. But do Peter and I each need a $1200 bonus to cover fuel costs? No - we drive fuel efficient vehicles and live 5 minutes from work. Granted our gas and electric bills have gone up and will continue to rise. But not enough that we need or would ever want state help.
So, with that in mind, I’m going to distribute my Sarah Love (plus a little extra) to two uniquely Alaskan designees:
- $500 is going to a good friend of mine who was badly mauled by a grizzly bear last month. She spent two weeks in the hospital, had multiple surgeries, and does not have health insurance.
- $1000 is going to the lawyer who has been helping the Government Hill neighborhood fight the other Bridge to Nowhere, Don Young’s Way (DYW).
I think it’s an excellent and appropriate use of our Sarah windfall.
Hello. I am
If Sarah gets elected, can I expect nationwide Sarah Bucks?
Nice donations, especially the mauling victim. I am most proud to have you as a sister.
