Hoar Frost and the Poochy

As I’ve stated many times before, cold clear days in Alaska are just stunning. Crystal blue skies that are so intense that they almost hurt, brilliant white snow, and hoar frost. This week I’m working with a consultant who is on her first trip to Alaska - yesterday she was a bit disappointed - it was cloudy and snowy all day - she didn’t get to see the sun. Well, the clouds moved out last night, and the temperature dropped. Perfect hoar frost conditions. This morning, all of the trees were covered in white frost - a prototypical Christmas card scene.

When the sun came up (at 10:00 AM) our consultant was totally amazed. She then asked what the white stuff was on the trees. I responded, “hoar frost.” She looked at me askance - I said, “Oh - ‘hoar frost - h-o-a-r frost’. Not ‘ho’ frost” She then got it.

I took a couple pictures of Tygey on our Noon walk. The lagoon is in the background on this shot.

  1. Frankie responds:

Why isn’t he wearing his little boots?!

  2. Steph responds:

The temperature was 10 degrees - just warm enough so that Tyge didn'’t need his booties. Which is good, because Tyge really doesn’t like getting his booties put on. He gets very small and tries to hide in a corner. Putting booties on is not painful, but he’s definitely afraid. We think the fear is a result either from his days as a street dog or from his evil first owner. Once the booties are on, he’s a happy guy.
