Kansas Whirlwind

Whoa - quite the whirlwind trip to Kansas. Because of my travel snafus, I spent Thursday and Friday on planes and in airports. After leaving Anchorage on Thursday at 8:00 AM, I finally arrived in Winfield Friday evening, just in time for my 5:30 PM Southwestern Science Advisory Committeee meeting. Yesterday morning and early afternoon were spent in more meetings. But I did have time for a few hours of geocaching before the evening Science Hall of Fame dinner.

As I type, I’m in travel mode again - I’m at the Seattle airport. In total, will be a 16 hour travel day door to door from Winfield to the Ski Boy-Slat Rat Manse. However, I admit that I geocached my way up from Winfield to the Wichita Airport.

I do love Kansas. So many wonderful memories. And as goofy as it sounds, I love the Kansas smell. It’s a fragance all its own - intense prarie. I’ve never been anywhere else other than the seashore that has such an intense rich and complex boquet. It’s like a really incredible old French Pinot Noir. It floods your nasal passages everytime you step outside. I can’t get enough of it.

I managed to get a few pictures this morning on my way up to Wichita.

My first stop was the Highland Cemetery to visit the graves of my grandparents. It seemed particularly appropriate since today is Veteran’s/Armistice Day and my grandfather was an Army Air Corps pilot in WWI.

Next stop was a geocache placed at an old abandonded Titan II missle site. The road leading to the site has that classic overgrown appearance.

And it’s not a Slat Rat trip to Kansas without a cow picture. These guys are Black Angus.

I guess that must be different than the smell we have on days when the feedlot dust settles in. All the rest of the days I would agree with you.

  2. Steph responds:

I almost mentioned feedlots. For example, the aroma around El Dorado is pretty bad….
