NPR’s New Music Site

I have to say, I really like NPR’s ambitious new music site, NPR Music. A very broad selection of good music - runs the gamut from classical to jazz to rock/pop/folk. For music browsing, it’s much better than MySpace or Amazon. The combination of a printed story and a concert form provide a much deeper context for the performers and the music. The site is a great place to get in-depth exposure to artists that one is curious about. Currently, I’m listening to an Iron and Wine concert recorded on September 27th.

Their in-browser music player is custom designed and its execution of playlist functionality is really quite good.

And it’s great fun from the Concert Association viewpoint. Today NPR Music highlighted Pepe Romero, who performed here in Anchorage two weeks ago. Several other artists that we’ve presented also receive prominent mention: Yo-Yo Ma (of course), Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christopher O’Reilly, etc.

I follow the digital content and digital content delivery space as a part of my job. Last year, at the Digital Hollywood conference, a panelist made a comment that really stuck with me: There are now two major players in the music trend and taste setting arena: NPR and Starbucks.

Very true indeed.

    Hmmm…

Tired to listen to Wallace Roney at the Kennedy Center Jazz Club and the Java Player thing crashed and burned.

  2. Steph responds:

Hmmm…I had no problems at all with the player - I’m running Firefox 2.0.0.9 and am current on Flash. The player is a flash based player.

If you had problems, I would assume others would also…

Enjoying my morning of watching the first snow come down and reading about and listening to music on my NPR play list (thanks to you)! So far my selections include The Syncopated Clock (as a jr. high student we had it on an 45 rpm record that we wore out–don’t think I have heard it since), Richard Strauss Alpine Sympony, and Mahler’s First Symphony.

I don’t think the snow will stay/last. It is really wet and the temperature is just barely at the snow point.

However The Alpine Symphony will last.
