Art in a Most Unlikely Location

Saturday morning, the Ski Boy and I stopped by one of my alltime favorites stores, Skinny Raven. Skinny Raven is a mecca for both runners and hip, stylin’ dressers. They have a great design sense and the shop’s staff is amazing - hip, fit, fun, smart, and even a few Olympians in the bunch.

Anyhoo, after a bit of shopping, I headed off to the dressing room to try on a shirt and a pair of slacks. I ducked into the room, closed the door, and hung up my jacket. I turned around and there on the dressing room wall was a painting by Alex Combs - one of Alaska’s most storied artists. And on the opposite wall was a Bill Kimura. I about fell over. How many dressing rooms have that kind of art hanging on the wall?

Later, as I was paying for purchases, I chatted with one of the sales guys. Evidently the owner of the land that Skinny Raven sits on is a major art collector. He stops by periodically to swap out one set of paintings for another. He also commissions pieces - there are several portaits of individual staff members by Byron Birdsall hanging on the walls. Pretty darn nifty. And very Alaskan.

Here’s the Combs piece.

And here’s the Kimura:
